Synopsis

The war is over. Don Pedro, Prince of Aragon accompanied by his villainous brother Don John and the two young lords Claudio and Benedict arrive in Messina. They are met by Leonato the Governor, his niece Beatrice and his young daughter Hero. Claudio quickly falls in love with Hero and Don Pedro promises to woo her on his behalf and win her affection that evening at a ball. Don Pedro is successful and the wedding is planned in seven night's time. In that time Leonato, Don Pedro, Claudio and Hero plan to trick Benedict and Beatrice into falling in love with each other.

Don John plots with Borachio (his servant) to stop the marriage of Hero and Claudio, as he is "sick in displeasure" with Claudio. They plan to disguise Borachio's lover, Margaret (Hero's gentlewomen) as Hero. Don John leads the Prince and Claudio the night before the wedding to witness what they believe is Hero being unfaithful.

Believing Hero has been unfaithful, Claudio publicly accuses and slanders her at the wedding, leaving her for dead. Believing she is innocent, the priest decides to hide Hero "and publish it that she is dead indeed". Benedict and Beatrice declare their love for one another and Beatrice demands Benedict kill Claudio as he has "wronged Hero". Benedict challenges Claudio to a duel to the death.

Borachio is captured in the night after confessing his crime, is cross examined and taken to Leonato's. Don Pedro and Claudio realize their terrible mistake and beg Leonato for forgiveness. Leonato declares he will forgive Claudio only on the condition that Claudio marry his other niece and heir.

Claudio agrees and spends the night in mourning at the grave of Hero.

The next day at the wedding Claudio marries the veiled niece of Leonato. She removes her veil to reveal she is Hero. They are reunited. Benedict and Beatrice publicly declare their love and plan to marry. Benedict says they should all dance before the wedding "that we might lighten our own hearts and their wives' heels."
